Métis Points of Interest Driving Tour
On the grounds surrounding our historic site stood a trading post, an 1830s Indian agency complex, and several French/Métis dwellings. People from the Manaigre, Pauquette, Dubay, Jourdain, Mirandeau, Ouilmette, and other households called this place home. Voyageur camps and Ho-Chunk lodges added to the mix. This little island in the Fox River floodplain was a Métis community hotspot.
However, the Portage Métis settlement is better seen from a wider lens. This 30-mile meandering loop through Portage and the nearby Caledonia hills introduces you to Portage’s Métis community through the places in which they found value to live, work, worship, and be laid to rest.
